On March 12, the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) announced the launch of the National Emergency Response Information System (NERIS) prototype, which aims to improve data exchange and analysis within American fire and emergency services. This system equips responders with real-time information and analytical tools for informed decision-making during emergencies.

Six local fire departments successfully onboarded onto NERIS and started reporting local emergency incident information through the new system. The entities participating in this initiative are the Frisco Fire Department in Texas, the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue in Virginia, the Orange County Fire Authority in California, the Springdale Fire Department in Arkansas, the Upper Merion Township Fire & EMS Department in Pennsylvania and the West Metro Fire Rescue in Colorado.

In an official statement, Dr. Lori Moore-Merrell, U.S. fire administrator, said, “The launch of the prototype NERIS and successful onboarding and use by these initial six fire departments represents a major step forward for USFA to fulfill our mission to equip the local fire and emergency services community with a modernized and easy-to-use solution to report critical incident information and provide them access to actionable intelligence.”

NERIS, expected to replace the legacy National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS), is a collaborative effort between USFA, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Science and Technology Directorate (S&T), and the Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI).
