As construction continues on major downtown road improvements in Denton, Texas, the city is taking steps to ease the impact on local businesses by expanding free parking options.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has temporarily closed both N. Locust and N. Elm Streets between W. Hickory and W. McKinney Streets as part of the ongoing project, which is expected to be completed by Sept. 30.

Despite the disruption, all downtown businesses remain open and accessible by foot. Recognizing the challenges posed by the removal of street parking, the city of Denton is collaborating with downtown stakeholders to provide free parking in select paid lots throughout the construction period.

According to a Facebook post by the city of Denton, stakeholders Eric Schmitz, Brad Andrus and Stephen Shannon were instrumental in securing these expanded parking options, ensuring that residents and visitors alike can continue to support local businesses without the added burden of parking fees.

For those planning to visit downtown Denton, the city has provided a map of all expanded free parking locations, available at Denton Main Street's website. Visitors are reminded to look for the "free parking" signs before parking.

Denton's vibrant local business community remains fully operational, and city officials are encouraging residents to continue patronizing these establishments during the construction period.

"One of the things that makes Denton special is our incredible local business community," the city of Denton noted in their post. "We believe we have the best of the best, so let's get out there and show them a little extra love this month."
