BSN SPORTS, a leading distributor of sporting goods apparel and equipment, launched its latest initiative, SURGE, aimed at bolstering female participation in sports and enhancing their overall well-being. This program provides coaches and female athletes with free online tools to foster self-esteem, confidence and mental health awareness.

SURGE, an acronym for Strength, Unity, Resilience, Growth and Equity, has garnered support from notable figures including Olympians, world-class athletes, coaches and medical professionals. The program's primary objective is to equip coaches and athletes with resources tailored to navigate the multifaceted challenges encountered both on and off the field, enabling girls to lead healthy and successful lives.

"It's proven that by participating in sports, girls are more likely to experience better mental and physical well-being, as well as academic and life success," said Terry Babilla, president of BSN SPORTS, in an official statement. "However, by the age of 14, we're seeing girls starting to drop out of sports at two times the rate of boys."

BSN SPORTS developed SURGE in response to nationwide feedback from coaches and female athletes. The initiative's goal is to equip coaches with the necessary tools to keep girls engaged in sports. These tools include webinars, specialized monthly curriculum and key developmental resources, meticulously crafted to cater to the mental, physical and emotional needs of young athletes.

To lead the program, BSN SPORTS appointed Allison Schmitt, an Olympian and world champion swimmer, as its honorary chief empowerment officer. Schmitt, with her background in both athletics and social work, aims to support coaches in nurturing the holistic development of athletes.

"As athletes, we receive so much physical support, yet so often we lack the mental health resources needed to cope with unique pressures," said Schmitt. "Coaching plays an integral role in the development of athletes, and my goal is to help coaches support female athletes in and out of sport."

BSN SPORTS also formed partnerships with organizations like WeCoach, Women Leaders in Sports and Nancy Lieberman Charities to expand the reach of the SURGE program. Additionally, ambassadors Emily Cole, Kaylei Akana and Alyssa Brito will help amplify its message to young girls across the U.S.
