Mexican Bar Company, owned by Brian Dunne and led by managing partner Ivan Sanchez, will host a special Día de los Muertos five-course dinner.
In a recent visit by Local Profile, Sanchez, a restaurant industry vet of 25 years, explained that the event’s goal is to honor the authentic ingredients and techniques that define Mexican cuisine.
"We always try to find the right ingredients to help you reminisce — it’s about catching that memory,” he said, adding that each course captures a traditional aspect of Mexican flavors and ingredients.
The first course features queso flameado, a cheese-and-chorizo dish served flaming with fresh corn tortillas, allowing guests to create tacos from the sizzling cheese and chorizo. With a focus on culinary nostalgia and creating memories, the second course is aguachile, a dish from Sinaloa, Mexico that is traditionally made with shrimp. Here, it’s adapted to include filet mignon for a Día de los Muertos twist, using dark colors to match the occasion.
For the third course, the team has created tamales Azteca, made in-house, filled with chicken, cheese and chorizo, served with green sauces and red sauces. The dish incorporates a molcajete sauce made from peppers ground with traditional Mexican methods, honoring the rustic flavors of tamales. "It brings out all the flavors on these particular dishes," said Sanchez.
The fourth course, enchiladas a la diabla, features a unique Mexican-Italian fusion. It is made with seafood and requeson, a ricotta-like cheese, in a creamy, spicy sauce. Sanchez explained that these enchiladas are distinctively popular and are available only on special occasions.
The meal concludes with pan de muerto, a sweet bread traditionally offered on Día de los Muertos altars. Sanchez’s version includes Nutella and cream cheese, paired with atole, a hot drink made from blue corn, valued for its nutritional benefits and unique flavor.
Each course in this special dinner reflects Mexican Bar Company’s dedication to honoring tradition and creating experiences that go beyond the plate. "Our goal is to transport guests through taste," Sanchez said. This celebration of Día de los Muertos offers diners a rare taste of Mexico’s soul through a meticulously curated menu.
Throughout October, the restaurant honored the Mexican holiday with an ofrenda altar inviting guests to celebrate the lives of their loved ones in a meaningful way. The celebration includes the seasonal la ofrenda margarita, a bold cocktail with blackberry puree and blood orange, served flaming with a tajin rim for $17.50.
Mexican Bar Company is also offering a Thanksgiving meal with a Latin twist, perfect for family gatherings or “Friendsgiving.” Available on Thanksgiving Day from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., the special menu includes one pound of turkey breast prepared in a traditional, a las brasas, or rojo style, with a side of ham. Diners can choose three sides from options like chorizo stuffing and elote esquite and finish with a dessert choice of pumpkin tres leches, churros or cheesecake. Specialty cocktails, including pumpkin spice and apple cinnamon infusions, are also available. Reservations are recommended.
