On Sept. 26, 2024, a groundbreaking ceremony took place for the Karla and Larry Steinberg Building. This new 100,000-square-foot home for Jewish Family Service (JFS) is located at 16301 Quorum Dr. in Addison.
The event, held during the organization’s 75th anniversary, marks the start of renovations, with plans to move in by late 2025. It also launched the public phase of a $40 million capital campaign called “Meeting the Moment.” So far, thanks to the Steinberg family and nearly 100 other supporters, JFS has raised $30 million for the campaign.
“Larry and I had been looking for a giving opportunity when we learned that JFS was bursting at the seams, and we found this to be a perfect fit,” Karla Steinberg said in an official statement. “We love JFS’ philosophy of opening their doors to anyone struggling. They have a wonderful hands-on approach with many wonderful volunteer opportunities and ways for the community to become involved.”
The new Karla and Larry Steinberg Building will be nearly four times larger than JFS’s Dallas home since 2001. It will include 18,000 square feet for behavioral health services, with counseling rooms, play therapy spaces and a sensory gym for children with special needs. The building will also feature a larger food pantry, a dedicated area for packing kosher meals, a second primary medical clinic that includes a dental clinic and the PLAN Clubhouse for adults with severe mental illness. Additionally, there will be computer training rooms and secure reception areas.
“For nearly 25 years, JFS has been our neighbor just across the tollway, and it is so exciting to see JFS come to Addison, a great place to work and serve the community,” Addison Mayor Bruce Arfsten said during the ceremony. “JFS is already serving 1,000 Addison residents with their unique wraparound care model, and we are excited to see its impact grow.”
Since 1950, JFS has been a part of the Dallas community, offering services to those in need. Last year, JFS helped 26,000 people. With the new building, JFS expects to serve about 50,000 people by 2028, increase client visits from 29,000 to 120,000 and grow food distribution from 450,000 to 1.4 million pounds.
