Swing to the music of the Garrett Wingfield Quintet, a free concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 29, at the Allen Public Library. Performer and composer Garrett Wingfield’s musical journeys weave through a multitude of genres, aesthetics, and mediums.
Recording with and composing large jazz ensemble arrangements for renowned soloists, such as Andy Martin, Arturo Sandoval, Greg Gisbert, and Chuck Findley, Wingfield contributed an arrangement to a recording project for the King of Thailand. His original composition, Anthropoidea is featured on the One O’Clock Band’s latest release, Lab 2015, and won a Downbeat Student Music Award for best Graduate Jazz Composition, a piece performed with the One O’Clock at the Generations Jazz Festival in Mount Gambier, Australia.

Garett observes, “Constantly shifting and unpredictable, the music of Garrett Wingfield Quintet is the sound of surprise. The band performs original compositions in an exciting and expressive way that is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat. Stylistically they center around jazz with a multitude of other influences coming together to round out the band’s unique sound.”
Fulfilling his interest in the intersection of performance and composition, Wingfield leads, plays with, and composes for multiple ensembles that perform often around the Metroplex. Regularly playing original music, his quintet is currently paying tribute to the late Ornette Coleman with a re-imagined set of the musical pioneer’s compositions.
As a composer, Garrett’s interests extend into mediums such as saxophone quartet, wind band, orchestra, and electronics. At recent national North American Saxophone Alliance conferences, he performed compositions incorporating electronics with improvising instrumentalists in order to cultivate innovations for interaction and hierarchies.
At the University of North Texas, Garrett conducted the Four O’ Clock Lab Band and was a teaching fellow in the jazz arranging department. The other members of the Quintet are Jordan Gheen on trumpet, Caleb Veazey on guitar, Miller Wrenn on bass, and Clint Dodson on drums.
