My Dangerous Obsession with Theatre Britain

As a Brit in Texas, there is literally nothing I love more than indulging in something truly British.

As a Brit in Texas, there is literally nothing I love more than indulging in something truly British. A leisurely cup of tea, crumpets, scones, and even a good British TV show, but for me, nothing beats seeing the latest production by Theatre Britain.

Now you may ask how good a British show put on in Plano, Texas, can possibly be? Well, let me tell you, it’s much better than you’d expect, and in fact the two shows I’ve had the pleasure of seeing (so far) have been bloody brilliant!

Just last weekend, I went to see Dangerous Obsession and loved it. Not only is the story gripping, intense and engaging, but the acting is superb. In this particular show, there are only three characters, and each one does a jolly good job. The accents are flawless, as are the facial expressions and mannerisms; I felt like I was in the West End.

My favorite part of the show? The letterbox. In England, our letterboxes are part of our front doors, as in there is an actual flap in the front door and that is where the postman posts the mail. Obviously, it’s different here in the U.S. Well, in Dangerous Obsession, a visitor calls round to the house and when the door goes unanswered, she flaps the letterbox and calls through it—which is exactly what us Brits do when a door goes unanswered! Well, there you are—that’s just one example of just how perfectly British Theatre Britain is.

Whether you’re a Brit abroad like me or just love good theatre, go see Dangerous Obsession (details below), and I guarantee you’ll add the rest of the years’ shows to your diary without hesitation—I already did!

Dangerous Obsession, Theatre Britain

Dangerous Obsession is an intriguing psychological thriller. One afternoon, a mild-mannered stranger turns up at the Driscoll house. Gradually, Sally and Mark Driscoll realize that John Barrett is more dangerous than he looks!
