Every year, Collin County students compete to perform a spring concerto with the Plano Symphony Orchestra (PSO). Winners are named in the Junior Division (grades 1–8) and the Senior Division (grades 9–12) in three categories: strings, winds & percussion and piano. Once winners are chosen for each division and each category, the finalists then compete for one of three Grand Prize Winner titles.

Talent came in abundance this year with a total of 90 contestants. Three young men won the judges’ musical hearts, two pianists and one cellist. The three Young Artists will give a solo performance at the March 19 PSO concert. The 10-year-old pianist winner, James Chung Yue Tien, will play a Chopin concerto. The 17-year-old pianist, Patrick Magee, will perform a Rachmaninoff concerto. Finally, the 17-year-old cellist, Alexander Davis-Pegis, will play a Dvorak concerto.

Tidbits about the winners:

  • James moved from Hong Kong to Dallas about two years ago. The main reason behind the move was to study with his current piano teacher. At just three years old James began playing the piano.
  • This was Patrick’s first time to enter this competition. He also plays the cello and double bass.
  • Alexander also plays piano, and gained interest in the arts from his parents who are both professional musicians.

Congratulations to James, Patrick and Alexander on this amazing accomplishment and good luck at the March 19 concerto!

The March 19 concert pays tribute to Marvin Hamlisch who is one of 12 people to win an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. Not to mention, he won a Pulitzer Prize and two Golden Globes. Hamlisch is the man who gifted us the music for The Sting, The Spy Who Loved Me, Sophie’s Choice, A Chorus Line and more. After his tribute, be prepared for the talented winners of the Annual Collin County Young Artist Competition and their concerto winning performances.
