Sci-Tech Discovery Center, Frisco’s leading family-friendly cultural and educational destination, has been awarded $50,000 by Raytheon Company’s Space and Airborne Systems business to help create a new MakerSpace in Colin County.

The MakerSpace, presented by Raytheon, will give tinkerers, inventors and budding engineers access to programs, technology and tools to test, prototype, demonstrate and build almost anything they can imagine. Open to the community and groups of all ages, the MakerSpace opens the door locally to the benefits of the relatively new phenomenon for DIY projects in design, engineering, fabrication and education.

“We are thrilled to be receiving this very generous donation from Raytheon to create the Sci-Tech MakerSpace,” said Sci-Tech Executive Director Peter Claffey. “This type of space truly embodies the mission of the Sci-Tech Discovery Center: To provide dynamic educational experiences that inspire people of all ages and backgrounds to embrace discovery and innovation through the active exploration of science, math and technology.”

The MakerSpace, scheduled to open to the public in June, will help the Sci-Tech Discovery Center take learning from the abstract to the physical through access to a larger pool of makers along with appropriate tools and materials. This will include 3D printer technology that has proven to be so pivotal to the maker movement.

“Raytheon believes this MakerSpace will provide a community anchor for hands-on, high-tech STEM workshop that reaches a variety of local organizations from school districts and Boys & Girls Clubs to veterans and the general public,” said Trudy Sullivan, Vice President, Communication & Public Affairs at Raytheon Space & Airborne Systems. “This MakerSpace will help take learning from abstract to tangible, a great reward for current and future engineers.”

A makerspace is a community center with resources that allow dreamers and builders of all types to convene, conspire and collaborate on the possible. Makerspaces combine manufacturing equipment, expertise and education to enable community members to design, prototype, create and manufacture new products that likely would be impossible to create with the resources available to individuals working alone.
