The McKinney Police Department has announced that applications are open for their next Citizens Police Academy, which starts on Thursday, February 18, 2016.

The 14-week course will educate residents about police functions and personal safety: traffic laws, DWI stops, crime scene investigations, SWAT and K-9 teams, and other police functions.

The 14-week course will be held from 7–10 p.m. every Thursday at the McKinney Public Safety Building, 2200 Taylor Burk Dr.

The primary goal of the Citizens Police Academy is to foster a better relationship between the community and the police department. It is envisioned that class members will:

  • Gain an understanding of the operations of the McKinney Police Department,
  • Develop an awareness and appreciation of the various challenges and decisions faced daily by police officers, and
  • Participate in practical exercises designed to illustrate various situations an officer experiences while on duty.

Let’s hope the Citizens Police Academy, being hosted by the McKinney Police Department in February, will be less “eventful” than the one we know and love from the 1984 movie “Police Academy”!
