One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime, so it is important to have suspicious spots checked by a dermatologist. As with all cancers, the early detection of skin cancer is a big key to survival and cure. Incidence rates for melanoma, one of the deadliest types of skin cancer, have been increasing for at least 30 years.

Melanoma is about 98 percent curable if caught in its earliest stages and treated. The appearance of new or fast-changing skin lesions should therefore be a concern—especially to those who have a personal
or family history of skin cancer, or any of the other factors that indicate an elevated risk.
